Enjoying Retirement: A Tale of Two Lives

As retirement brings new opportunities, one man’s journey illustrates the fine line between indulgence and financial stability. Lưu Hiểu Khánh, a 70-year-old retiree from China, reflects on his past choices and the implications they carry for his golden years.

A Comfortable Pension

Enjoying Retirement: A Tale of Two Lives

Lưu Hiểu Khánh receives a pension of 6,000 yuan (approximately 22 million VND), which initially provides him with a comfortable standard of living. Upon retiring, he began spending time with a former colleague, Mr. Lý, both relishing their newfound freedom after years of hard work. While Mr. Lý planned to engage in Tai Chi, care for his grandchildren, and enjoy a peaceful retirement, Mr. Lưu had different aspirations. “We’ve worked hard all our lives. Now, it’s time to live for ourselves,” he stated, advocating for a life filled with new experiences and adventures.

Motivated by his beliefs, Mr. Lưu convinced Mr. Lý to join him on a series of trips both within and outside of China over the next two years. They explored scenic mountains, vibrant cities, and coastal areas, relishing the culinary delights of summer vacations. Despite their shared enthusiasm, the companionship waned, and after two years, Mr. Lý chose to step back from travel, citing financial concerns.

Diverging Paths

“I’m looking for ways to find joy in retirement without spending too much,” Mr. Lý explained. He opted to focus on Tai Chi and family, activities he cherished deeply. While Mr. Lý resumed a routine of meaningful pursuits, Mr. Lưu felt a strong desire to continue living for himself, a conviction shaped by his past.

A divorce left Mr. Lưu to raise his son alone, enduring a phase of juggling multiple jobs to make ends meet. With his son now established and starting a family, Mr. Lưu felt a sense of relief as he embraced retirement. “I believe everyone should enjoy life for themselves at least once. In old age, health deteriorates, and you can’t experience life to the fullest anymore,” he expressed.

Seeking Personal Happiness

Despite losing his travel companion, Mr. Lưu continued his adventures, frequently purchasing items that pleased him. He found joy in hosting gatherings and indulging in daily lottery ticket purchases as well as antique collecting. However, the costs of these hobbies took a toll on his finances.

Over ten years into retirement, Mr. Lưu’s pension became insufficient to cover his expenses. He even found himself borrowing money from friends and family, culminating in a situation where he could not afford a meal until he received his monthly pension. Ultimately, his son had to step in to help pay off his debts.

A Wake-Up Call

Amidst his financial struggles, Mr. Lưu began to notice a decline in his health due to poor eating habits and lifestyle choices. His son’s concerned words resonated with him: “If you keep living like this, no one can help you.” These remarks propelled Mr. Lưu to reevaluate his life.

Then one day, while walking in the park, he encountered Mr. Lý. Observing the difference between them was stark. While Mr. Lý maintained a healthy complexion and an active lifestyle filled with exercise, gardening, and tea-drinking, Mr. Lưu felt exhausted and stressed.

Recognizing Mistaken Choices

Despite receiving the same pension, their lives took strikingly different paths. Mr. Lưu came to realize that his desire to enjoy retirement had overshadowed crucial aspects of financial responsibility and health management. Meanwhile, Mr. Lý thrived by curating beneficial activities for his physical and mental well-being, balancing enjoyment with moderation.

Reflecting on the contrast, Mr. Lưu lamented, “I regret not having considered my future as calmly as Mr. Lý did. I focused solely on fulfilling my immediate desires without planning ahead. Now, as my health diminishes and I face hardships, it’s too late for me to change course.”

Despite the lessons learned and the profound realizations about life in retirement, Mr. Lưu’s story serves as a cautionary tale. Embracing personal joy and living life fully can come at a cost, and finding a balance is crucial for enjoying the later years of life.
